Abstract: Silica nanoparticles, the surface of which was modified by a 3-aminopropylsilyl group, compacted gene-size DNA in aqueous solutions in the presence of Na+ or K+. The DNA-compaction efficiency of histone-size (10 nm diameter) nanoparticles is greater than that of large (100 nm) nanoparticles under similar experimental conditions.
